Am I the right sitter for you?

Whether you are leaving for a holiday or for work, travel the world or visit family and friends - knowing that your home will be in good hands can make a big difference for your peace of mind. Taking the time to discuss expectations and house rules in advance will enable you to find a housesitter ideally suited for your individual needs.

Here's what I offer during a housesit:

  • care for your cat(s) and plants
  • collect your mail
  • be present for electricity meter readings
  • buy some food for you so you can have a meal at home after your return
  • leave your home as clean and tidy as you left it (or better)

To help you feel safe and secure during your absence house rules would need to be discussed as well. I feel honoured to be entrusted with your home and would always opt for maximum safety and protection in your interest.

As your sitter I pledge to

  • respect your property and your privacy
  • keep your home neat and clean up after myself
  • have no guests over unless discussed with you in advance
  • have no parties or loud music in your home
  • keep windows closed and doors locked when leaving your home
  • stay in regular contact with you
  • communicate any issues in a timely manner

A housesit can be a win-win for both homeowner and sitter. Here's why:

What you get out of a housesit

  • your pets and plants will be cared for
  • your mail will be collected: no full letter-box that could indicate your absence
  • proper temperature control to avoid overheating or freezing water pipes
  • quick communication and problem solving should any issues arise (for example a water damage situation)
  • your home will look lived in and deter possible burglary and theft
  • a lived in home will meet your insurance requirements
  • support at the home front and peace of mind

What I get out of a housesit:

  • more travel opportunities
  • a temporary rent-free home base that allows me to continue my work from home
  • a new city to explore like a local
  • a temporary pet companion to love and care for
  • practicing my foreign language skills
  • living my dream: travelling and living in different inspiring cities

Limits:

A housesit can be a great solution for both sides, but in the end it comes down to compatibility. What are your specific needs, and is your sitter competent and willing to meet them? Some people are happy with a lived in home, others are looking for a professional caretaker. What are your house rules, and will the sitter be comfortable with them? It makes sense to be as clear as possible about what would and wouldn't work for either side.

Here's what I DON'T offer during a housesit:

  • sitting for dogs, birds or farm animals
  • repair work, redecoration, paint jobs, or spring cleaning
  • paying for utilities (I don't charge for my support so I would hope to enjoy free basic comforts like water, electricity, Wifi etc.)
  • manage rentals, checking in and out of guests or tenants
  • sharing your place with your relatives or friends
  • answering your calls or handling your phone messages

And last but not least, some of my needs would have to be met, too. For example:

  • I only offer housesits in urban settings with good public transport links
